On Your Own: Individual Health Insurance
|
There are plenty of people in California who need to purchase their own health insurance, whether it’s because they are self employed or because their employer simply doesn’t offer health coverage. Unfortunately for these people, purchasing individual health insurance is quite expensive, especially in a state like California. A person who needs to purchase their own insurance would be wise to do as much shopping around as possible in order to find the best pricing.
Getting a rate quote for individual health insurance really isn’t that difficult at all, especially for people who have access to the internet. Many websites offer one-stop shopping in the sense that they can offer quotes from several different health insurance providers. Many people, however, are much more comfortable going directly to a particular health insurance provider’s website to get the quote straight from them. Initial health insurance quotes are very easy to get online; a person merely needs to answer a few questions and state some health insurance preferences before they are provided with several different options. These quotes, however, are not legally binding in the sense that some health insurance companies require additional information or even physical exams before assigning a monthly premium. The online quotes, however, can give people a realistic view of what they will probably be paying.
Naturally, people who need to insure more than just themselves will wind up paying more for health insurance. Health insurance rates for a family of four including small children can really break the bank, but unfortunately health insurance is simply a necessary expense. People should never allow themselves to believe that they can go their whole lives without ever needing health insurance, and additionally people without health insurance are probably missing out on preventative care which would have otherwise avoided some major illnesses.
There is one thing harder than shopping for individual health care: shopping for individual health care with a preexisting condition. People with preexisting conditions often have a hard time finding insurance coverage that is not phenomenally expensive, and in some cases people who have major illnesses simply can’t find a health care insurance company willing to insure them. For individuals with this sort of problem California insurers offer what is called a state pool. Much like group health insurance for companies and small businesses, a state pool essentially pools together all the people who need health insurance but are having trouble acquiring it through traditional means due to the cost. Having all the people in one grouping allows them to basically become a group seeking insurance instead of individuals seeking insurance on their own, and this makes the premiums lower. There are different rules and regulations associated with membership into a state pool, and each individual state regulates their pools through their insurance commissioner’s office.
If individual health insurance is simply too expensive there are programs which California offers to either offset the cost of health care or pay for it altogether. There is no reason why a person who is sick should not be able to receive quality health care, regardless of their income.
