California Group Medical Insurance
Medical Insurance for Small Businesses
|
Employers in California need to be able to attract the best employees for available positions, and one of the ways to ensure that the positions are attractive is to offer a really great benefits package including medical insurance. Finding a great medical insurance plan, however, isn’t the easiest thing for employers to do, and it certainly isn’t the cheapest benefit to offer either. Depending on the needs of the employees, a medical insurance plan can be either a real blessing to the company or instead can be a real hassle.
Medical insurance is expensive. In some cases quality medical insurance can seem like an unattainable and unrealistic goal for smaller businesses, but luckily the state of California has taken measures to ensure that even the smallest of businesses receive equal treatment when seeking out medical insurance. In the past, insurers would refuse to deal with small businesses and simply didn’t want their business. Legislation has made it illegal for insurance companies to discriminate against companies based on the number of employees they have, and similar legislation made it to where the insurers are required by law to offer every available insurance plan to small businesses too. There are also regulations which ensure medical insurance companies renew current policies for small businesses since in the past they would sometimes refuse to renew if the few employees had been ill often. This sort of legislation is not effective in all the states; in fact California has been quite innovative in its approach to protecting small businesses.
The burden of medical insurance monthly premiums can fall on the shoulders on the owner, or the employees, or a combination of the two. Some employers are in a position to be able to pick up most if not all of the cost of medical insurance for their employees. This acts as an incredibly attractive benefit to potential employees and probably has a positive effect on retention of quality employees. On the other side, there are employers who simply offer medical coverage to follow the law, and put the bulk of the monthly premium costs onto their employees. Some companies have earned bad reputations for offering medical coverage which their underpaid employees could certainly not afford. Other companies pay a portion of the monthly premiums while expecting employees to cover some of the premiums as well. This arrangement generally works well as long as the employees aren’t picking up too much of the slack and conversely the employer isn’t breaking the bank to pay the premiums either.
Employers need to realize that many potential employees look towards the benefits offered by companies before deciding on whether to accept a job offer or not. With medical insurance being such a costly expenditure, many people seek out companies which are willing to offer great coverage at a low cost. Employers should take care to make sure they are offering an attractive medical insurance package. Not only will this attract quality employees, but will also keep the best employees from seeking out a different job.
