CA Health Insurance
California State-Assisted Insurance Plans

Living in California isn’t cheap. Everything costs more: clothes, electricity, even a dozen eggs will cost more to purchase in California than it would in many other places around The United States. Consequently it is no big shock that health insurance in California is often more expensive than elsewhere, and this can be a big burden to residents who are already shelling out big dollars to simply keep food on the table and a roof over their family’s heads. Add to the daily expenditures the cost of health insurance, and the result is many California families pushed to the financial edge.
Some families living in California simply choose to avoid the topic of health care until an emergency arises, which in turn results in little to no preventative care and more trips to urgent care facilities. Waiting until an ailment has reached the level where it needs immediate care will generally cost more than if it was caught early on, and preventative care may have prevented the ailment from ever having developed in the first place. Instead, many Californians really have no other choice than to simply wait until they get so sick that they can’t work and then deal with the resulting medical bills as best they can. There are also some people who live in California who, in theory, could afford health insurance with a strict financial budget, but they instead choose to use the money for other things and hope for the best. These people are often thrown into a serious financial crisis when a healthcare issue does pop up and they haven’t planned for it.
There is help for Californians who can’t afford health insurance. The Medi-cal system assists residents who fall under a certain income criteria by offering health care services to people who would otherwise not be able to afford it. State budgetary restrictions, however, always have an effect on this program and as funding is slashed more people wind up without any sort of coverage. California is also a state with a large population of undocumented immigrants, and these people not only often will make incomes below the poverty level but they aren’t willing to attempt to apply for health benefits.
So what is a Californian to do when they find themselves without health care but also lacking the money to pay monthly premiums? Applying to and being accepted to the Medi-Cal system can help tremendously, but just as any welfare program this program is not meant to be a long-term provider. Some people fall just above the income specifications for Medi-Cal, and for this group there are other programs which will assist with portions of medical expenses. There are also free clinics throughout California which people can utilize, although critics of these clinics claim that there simply aren’t enough clinics to serve everyone and also that the care received in these establishments are sub par.
It is incredibly important to prepare for any sort of medical emergencies which may arise. If purchasing health insurance is unattainable for a person and they also don’t qualify for any assistance, then a medical emergency fund needs to be set up at the very least.
