Blue Cross High Deductible Health Plans--The Power Health Fund 500 |
Blue Cross of California offers two Power Health Fund plans, the Power Health Fund 500 and the Power Health Fund 750. These are plans where medical expenses are covered on a first dollar basis up to a certain amount per year. If any of the money in the health fund remains unused at the end of the year, they can even be rolled over onto the next year’s allotted funding amount. Members are allowed a certain dollar amount of covered services per year. Power Health Fund plans are high deductible health plans, designed for members who do not usually seek medical assistance or don’t have a problem paying more out of their own pockets.
The Power Health Fund 500 pays up to $500 per year of expenses for an individual and up to $1000 dollars worth of expenses for a family. These are the first dollar amounts. After the first dollar amounts have been satisfied, members are left to meet the annual deductible for an individual or family, which is $1000 and $2000 respectively for in network, participating Blue Cross of California physicians. As far as coverage for non-participating physicians goes, the Power Health Fund 500 plan will only pay up to $10,000 worth of expenses for an individual member and up to $20,000 for a family.
Under the Blue Cross of California Power Health Fund 500, plan, routine visits to the doctor’s office incur a $35 dollar co pay for visits to participating physicians ; the plan will pay half of the cost of a visit to a physician who does not participate in the Blue Cross network, but none of the related expenses incurred from that visit--these costs are the sole responsibility of the member. To keep costs down, it is always recommended that the member select the generic option of a prescription drug if at all possible, as they could be required to pay the co pay plus the difference between the price of the two versions of the drug.
As with many other Blue Cross of California health plans, the co pay for a generic prescription drug is $15 and the co pay for name brand prescription drugs is $25, but there is a $350 annual deductible for name brand prescription drugs that must be satisfied.
Professional services include maternity services, X-rays, blood work and other lab work. The Power Health Fund 500 will pay 60 percent of the cost of such professional services when obtained by in network professionals, but only 50 percent of the cost of non-participating providers. In such cases, the plan covers none of the related expenses incurred related to non-participating professional services.
Annual physical exams are not covered expenses under the Power Health Fund 500 or the power Health Fund 750, however HealthyCheck screenings are covered for a $25 or $75 co pay, whichever option has been selected by the member.
